Union Level Consultation Workshop on Formation of WMO (WMG & WMA) at Koijhuri UP

In the beginning of the session, all participants registered their name and filled-up the registration book and format by individual participants. CFs and SFs helped the participants to do it. Workshop was held at the Union Parishad of Koijhuri which is situated within the sub unit area. After that mid-level WMO Specialist welcomed the chairman, members, stakeholders, elite person and the participants for day long Union Level workshop and he requested Mr. Chairman to inaugural session of the workshop. The Holly Quran and Geeta were cited, and after that attended participants introduced himself with their name, address and occupation.

Inaugural session

Md. Amir Hossain Masud, Member of 2 No Word, Kojhuri UP (nominated by chairman) presided over the function Mr.Abul Hashem attended in inaugural session as a chief guest. Other respective experts and PMO officials were present in the dais in the workshop. He requested the officials to implement the activities properly mainly re- excavated the canals for irrigation and solve the water logged problems and Mr. Amir Hossain Masud inaugurated the workshop.

Welcome speech

Md. Abul Hashem, former chief Agronomist-Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and Agriculture Specialist of ISPMC, Faridpur who has given a special thanks to attend community peoples of Koijhuri union under Faridpur district. He said BWDB is doing work on water Resources Management through people’s participation. When heavy rainfall occurs in this areas then that time low land became overflowed and finally a huge areas are inundated with water as well as created water logging problem. He has explained the main objectives of the SAIWRPMP-AF in the Southwest region of Bangladesh. He discussed the needs of WMGs & WMAs formation by the peoples participation because without participation, WMGs will not well functioning. By the project, drainage systems will be developed in your areas. For this reasons, land types will be changed. Cultivable land will increased but open water areas will reduced.

Project description through Power Point Presentation (PPP)

Md. Hafizur Rahman, Deputy Chief Extension Officer,SAIWRPMP-AF, BWDB Faridpur presented the whole WMO formation procedure one by one through PPP. He presented the previous day workshop slides with details. Participants enjoyed the session. At the end of the session, some participants shared their experience and their problems and he answered properly.

Open discussion session

After the presentation, an open discussion session was conducted to know problems on fisheries, agriculture, water logging and civil work etc. This session was mainly conducted through the respective experts. Enlisted the following informed problems on fisheries, agriculture and infrastructure which will be included in SIP report.

Discussed issues on

a. Agriculture

1. Water logging problem, only one crop cultivate in round the year; 2. Lack of good quality seeds; 3. Lack of agricultural technology; 4. Shortage of use of quality fertilizer & pesticides; 5. Severity of disease and 6. No scope to soil testing.

b. Fisheries

1. Problems of water quality; 2. Lack of fisheries training; 3. Lack of modern technology; 4. No fish hatchery; 5. Lack of good quality fish fry/fingerlings; 6. High feed price and 7. Problems of fish marketing etc.

NB: Local Extension Agent for Fisheries (LEAF) Mr. Jamil Akter said that Department of Fisheries (DoF) has provided some water test kits and training to skill up the local fish farmers and nurserer. If possible, Koijuri UP could be a "Fisheries training & Service Centre” and he is agreed to work there.

C. Civil work

Water logging problem required to re-excavate the khal. The branch Khals are HawaiKhali, Beel Nalia Khal and Mridhadangi Khal will have to re-excavate. Required 3 vent Regulator at Mridhadangi and 2 vent Regulator at Beelnalia areas. The length of Caraldia to BeelShukunia is 15 Km (adjacent villages are Bangdoba, Kachnail & Ghoradah), Need to excavation of khal from Muraridah Alamer Dokan to Anowarer Bari-length: ½ Km, Pankdangabeel to Shuchibari- length-1 Km, Charardiabeel to beel Shukunia, length-1.5 Km)

Closing of Workshop

Mr. Md. Amir Hossain Masud give thanks to all participants basically UP members, elite persons & BWDB & ISPMC officials those who spent their valuable time in the workshop. He will extend his hands for all kind of cooperation to the project. Then he formed a “Foundation Committee” which is consists of 13 members with 3 female members and declared the name of the committee members. 

Lastly he closed the workshop with vote of thanks.
